Food Price Concerns

The Minister of Agriculture has come out with an attack of words on retailers for their food pricing structures as food price concerns are growing because of the hike in prices.

With Bulgaria seeing an improvement in business economics over the past ten years and increased number of larger foreign businesses have moved in to Bulgaria in a move to improve profits. This increase in large retailers has also caused an increase in food prices as retailers raise prices to make more money out of consumers, something the Minister of Agriculture is not happy about.

Miroslav Naydenov, the Minister of Agriculture has said: "It is ridiculous that, with a producer price of lamb of BGN 5-6 per kg, the retail price soars to BGN 15 per kg,"

The attack has come because of prices rising dramatically in recent times because of the Easter (Velikden) holidays coming up where prices of lamb and other seasonal products have soared in price. This move is seen as a one time hit on the consumer coinciding with the holidays when specific food types such as lamb are eaten.
