Flooding Hazard on Turkish Border

The borders of Bulgaria and Turkey are seen as dangerous from an environmental point of view as the bordering rivers tend to overflow on a regular basis in the Winter and Spring seasons.

This flooding is usually seen in the low lying areas which causes disruption to people wishing to cross the border from Bulgaria to Turkey and vice versa. More importantly the flooding regularly devastates crops and farmland causing economic damage and hurting the livelihoods of farmers in the area.

The two rivers that cause the main flooding issues are the Maritsa and Arda rivers which start in the Bulgarian mountains before flowing through Bulgaria to the regions of Haskovo and Yambol before entering into Turkey.

In recent times the amount of flooding seen on the Bulgarian and Turkish borders has increased, this increase is in line with weather changes seen across the globe.

To counter these problems the Bulgarian and Turkish governments have set up a joint strategic cooperation council to remove red tape in joint operations and to address the issue they both face. This strategic cooperation councilwill include both the Prime Minister of Bulgaria and Turkey along with key high profile government officials from both countries.
