Bulgaria has announced it is to rebuild the border fence with Turkey that was taken down after the fall of Communism and the end of the Cold War.
For many years there stood a huge wall running the length of the border between Turkey and Bulgaria but when Bulgaria moved away from Communism after the end of the Cold war this fence was removed.
The Bulgarian Government have announced the fence is to be rebuilt, but this time it isnt because of a war between nations, it is because of the war being waged against the Foot and Mouth disease affecting cattle.
Bulgaria has had a recent outbreak of the Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) and it reportedly happened after a wild boar carring the disease crossed the border from Turkey into Bulgaria.
This move has come after a second town has seen an outbreak of FDM, this town being Rezovo. All 250 cattle in Rezovo have been killed to stop the disease spreading further.
Bulgaria will be hoping that the EU will support them in this move by helping to finance the border fence, although if they dont the fence will still be built.
Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naidenov has said of the move:
"Initially the cost will be covered by the state. If we receive compensation from Brussels (for the fence) well, that's fine," and he went on further to say "If not, it will be still cheaper for us to just build a fence and protect our farmers that way, rather than having to pay them compensation for the animals,"
