Hepatitis A Numbers Rising

Hepatitis A has hit Bulgaria hard over the winter season as numbers have grown dramatically. In fact the numbers are currently at a level where 40 new cases a day over the whole of Bulgaria, but interestingly the infectious disease is only found in a small number of regions.

Overall 19 regions are currently clear of the illness with places like Pazardzhik and Kyustendil not recording any new Hepatitis A patients, in contrast three regions in particular are seeing higher Hepatitis A patients. The regions of Plovdiv, Haskovo and Stara Zagora are recording patient levels that are higher than normal with one hospital in Haskovo registering 208 new Hepatitis A sufferers in December 2010 alone.

Dr. Angel Kunchev, chief of Infectious Diseases Supervision Department in the Ministry of Healthcare has advised that he feels the reports of the recent new Hepatitis A patient levels is a way of creating panic among the population.
