China has just announced that it is increasing its minimum wage. This increase in the minimum wage within China took affect at midnight when the New Year began and now means that China has a minimum wage higher than that of Bulgaria.
The increase in the minimum wage in China announced by its government is an increase of 20%, so is very significant to those within China on lower salaried jobs. The monthly minimum wage in China is now 1160 Yuan, an increase from 960 Yuan. This means that when converted to Bulgarian Leva it has moved from 215 BGN to 260 BGN, some 20 BGN above Bulgaria's minimum wage of 240 BGN.
The Bulgarian minimum wage of 240 BGN was set back in January 2009 and has not been increased since. The current Bulgarian minimum wage is 74% higher than that of 1999 when it was only 64 BGN, this being said the cost of living in Bulgaria has grown dramatically in this time.
