Those that do hunt the animals have to have a special licence to do so and the quota set is worked on less than three percent of the bear population in the country, but this has not stopped environmentalist questioning the move.
There are reportedly between 540 and 560 wild bears roaming the mountainous regions of Bulgaria and the quota allows for the killing of seventeen bears over seven regions in Bulgaria where bears can be found.
Of the seventeen kills allowed, seven were given to the region of Smolyan. Many in the region have not been happy as bears have attacked cattle and bee hives along with attacking and killing someone in a Smolyan village last year.
